The Piedmont Prime Time Community Band began its first rehearsal on August 16, 2002 with 17 people in attendance. The first members answered a newspaper ad asking for interested musicians, but soon word-of-mouth brought in many more. The band now consistently maintains over 40 members and has a full instrumentation. A community band is not a new idea in this region; from the early 1900's until the mid-1940's Cannon Mills sponsored a band to play for the community. In the Concord area, there was a Brown Hill Community Band in the early years of the last century. The Piedmont Prime Time Community Band carries on the familiar age-old tradition of providing people with positive musical entertainment. At concerts, the audience hears a wide variety of music ranging from classical to jazz to patriotic and more. The band has playing in many different settings, including pre-game at the Kannapolis Intimidators Stadium and at an annual spot in the Concord Christmas Parade. In the words of Piedmont Prime Time Community Band Co-Founder Jon Hutchinson, "The last community band to serve the area that I know, was The Cannon Mills Band that existed sometime in the 1940's. My dad, Ralph Hutchinson, played tuba with the group. But for a number of years, no community outlet existed for adult musicians to continue the enjoyment of playing in an ensemble. The area has always had wonderful middle and high school band programs, but those who graduated had no place to use their talents. Their instruments ended up in the attic, pawnshop, or handed down to the next generation of band members." "But, why should all of those years of playing in the school band come to an abrupt halt upon leaving school? I felt it was a disservice to the community to have such strong musical talent and no place to play, so I felt it was time to start another community band opportunity." "Nancy Brewer, a local school music teacher and friend, and I worked together to see if there was indeed an interest in a community band. As you can see through this website and hear at any of our performances, there was an overwhelming community response from both musicians and audience interest and support. This has been a dream come true for me and it is very exciting to see the start and the growth of this group." |
